Finance Panel Preps Override, Seeks Members
Oakham Finance Committee confirmed a vacant seat and mapped out override outreach.
Finance Committee · Meeting of September 29, 2026
Oakham Finance Committee confirmed a vacant seat and mapped out override outreach. Chair Vincent Piucci, Vice Chair Donald Haapakoski and Secretary Clare Hendra, the panel's only active members, determined member Brad Battersby's seat automatically vacant after five consecutive absences, per Town Moderator Mark Turnbull's reading of town bylaw. The committee is pushing a $550,000 Proposition 2½ override toward an October 26 special town meeting and a ballot vote expected in late January or early February, rescheduling Senior Center informational sessions to November 5 and 10.
Hendra noted the town's stabilization reserves, once about "21 percent of the budget," have been drawn down well below the recommended 10 to 15 percent range. Members also reworked a draft override letter to the Barre Gazette after guidance that direct calls to "vote in favor" could violate election law on the ballot question, though similar language for the town meeting article remains allowed.
